Australia will aim to continue their sensational start at the 2018 Commonwealth Games when they take on Barbados in their second group game. Join The Roar for live scores from 8:30pm (AEST).

The Diamonds got off to the perfect start on the Gold Coast last night, thumping Northern Ireland to the tune of 94-26.

The 68-goal margin is one of the biggest in history, with the Diamonds falling just six goals short of 100 and 19 short of their highest ever total, which came against Singapore in 1991 when they scored 113.

It’s hardly a surprise to see the Diamonds start the way they did against the ninth-ranked side in the world. The world number one have won three straight world cup’s and are reigning Commonwealth Games champions.

While the top 12 teams in the world are all Commonwealth nations, there is a wide gap in talent between the top and bottom, as established last night.

The Diamonds were led by Caitlin Thwaites, who scored 39 goals from 39 attempts. Her height advantage will exist again in this one and she will be instrumental for Australia’s chances of going two from two.

For Barbados, who are ranked two spots lower than Northern Ireland, the pressure will be on simply not to be blown out and keep it competitive during the first quarter.

The Carribean nation failed to win a game at the 2014 Games in Glasgow, and it’s hard to see that changing with the side struggling to match it on the international stage.

They were beaten 77-27 by the Australians last time the sides matched up.

Prediction
Realistically, this should be even easier than last night for the Australians. While stranger things have happened, not many spring to mind and the best team in the world should continue their hot start to the netball tournament on the Gold Coast.

Australia by 30 goals.
