Fine line between arrogance and confidence

We all have faith and belief in our club or national team. Or in a point of view about something that matters to us. Sometimes it’s unshakable, no matter what the circumstances or facts.

Quite often, on this forum and others, that confidence in a team and its performance – current or future – is seen as arrogance by others.

At what point do we cross the line from acceptable, evidence-based confidence into exaggerated self-belief in your own view that often has the consequence of belittling others?

Is it fair for Australian commentators to say that they have an easy draw in the next World Cup as they have only Ireland and iIaly to deal with?

Despite England’s current performance, can their supporters say with confidence – misplaced or otherwise – they’ll still be in at the business end of the next World Cup, and could possibly win it?

Or are they just arrogant?

Super 14 rugby is much better than Northern Hemisphere club rugby. Is this an arrogant opinion or a fair assessment of factual evidence?

Or is it all just good-natured banter and no-one takes it seriously at all?
