Essendon AFL coach Mark Thompson has defended Tom Bellchambers after the Bombers’ ruckman left a Melbourne restaurant without paying his bill.
Bellchambers was dining in Albert Park on Saturday night.
Thompson said the incident had been an innocent mistake.
“We take it seriously and we know all the facts,” Thompson told a news conference on Wednesday.
“Even though it’s an unfortunate thing to happen, there wasn’t much in it.
“I’ve filled my car up with petrol and driven away without paying the bill.
“So that’s all been handled.
“It shouldn’t have happened, and we’re not happy, but there was no intent.
“I think he’d been at the restaurant, knew the owner, eaten there a lot of times so it’s not a big issue.”
Thompson says the restaurant bill has now been paid.
