Let me start off by saying though I am a Manchester United supporter, who in no way supports the Gunners as a club.

At the start of the season it seemed as though Arsenal were going through the motions, having not boosted their squad other than the inclusion of bicycle-kicking Yaya Sanogo.

The 3 – 1 loss to Aston Villa typified the Arsenal side of the last five years, a side that on the surface was an example of class, but as soon as the game got difficult were left with no hope.

Recently however, they have displayed the ability to be one of the best sides in Europe, stringing together a club record of 11 wins away from home.

Here are the five reasons why Arsenal can win the league this season:

1. Cutting ties
Over the off-season Arsenal offloaded a massive 23 players, including Andrei Arshavin, Denílson (Denílson Pereira Neves), Vito Mannone, Andre Santos, Sebastien Squillaci, Marouanne Chamakh and Gervinho (Gervais Lombe Yao Kouassi).

All these players are of Premier League quality, just not title-winning quality.

Parting ways with these players will lighten up the training paddock by losing the bad blood from players who are not starting as much as they would like.

2. Mesut Özil
The bug-eyed German is the best player in the Premier League. Even if Gareth Bale was still at Spurs, Özil would still be the best player.

Özil has the best passing game in the world, having 161 assists for Real Madrid in 159 games. As long as he stays fit, he could assist Arsenal in winning the league.

Moreover, Özil’s inclusion is a sign of Arsenal’s determination to win, which could indicate more big signings in January.

3. The midfield
Easily Arsenal’s biggest strength. Arsenal have the talent needed to dominate teams in possession.

The likes of Mikel Arteta, Jack Wilshere, Santi Carzola, Tomáš Rosický, Abou Diaby, Aaron Ramsey, Mathieu Flamini and of course Özil would find a place in most European teams’ midfield – and if one gets injured, another three are able to take his place.

4. They are top
They are in the lead after five games, so their fate is in their hands.

Many fans believe it is the big games that win titles, but Arsenal are a side that often wins the big games. It is the little games that will win Arsenal the league – like their win against Aston Villa.

5. Arsene Wenger
This will be his 13th year as Arsenal manager, making him the most experienced of Premier League managers. This experience may just be what gets the team over the line.

I am a fan of his footballing philosophy of ‘play as if it is art’, and with all the other contending clubs managed by men in their first or second year at their respective clubs, the Frenchman could be the key to the Gunners’ success.
