Last week I wrote that Liverpool’s performance against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League was their best performance all season. They certainly backed it up with their hammering of Manchester United in the EPL, a result that revitalises the title race.
After Manchester United’s record run of clean sheets, to lose 4-1 at home to their fiercest rivals, allowing Liverpool to claw back into title contention, was a bitter pill to swallow, especially considering the extent of the defeat.
United were torn apart by Liverpool.
They weren’t very convincing against Inter Milan in the Champions League, either, and this isn’t the time of the season to lose confidence and form.
While they appeared on course for the title, they have not been entirely convincing in their performances and have lacked that killer instinct this season.
Liverpool, on the other hand, was fantastic.
Once again, Fernando Torres showed why he should be in any discussion on who is the best striker in the world. His pace, deft touch and quality finishing were all on show at Old Trafford
United’s Vidic has been caught out numerous times now against Liverpool, proof that even world class defenders struggle to contain Torres when he is in this type of form.
But one thing is clear regarding Liverpool’s title aspirations, and this was underscored in the victories against Real and United: they need both Steven Gerrard and Torres fit and firing.
When they don’t have the pair fit, they are unable to break teams down.
While the United result was a warning sign, too often this season they have dropped points when they shouldn’t have, namely when Gerrard or Torres were missing.
With Chelsea’s victory over Manchester City bringing them to within four points of United, second on goal difference, the EPL title race has certainly tightened up compared to only a few weeks ago when Van der Sar’s clean sheet record looked set to take United strolling to another title.
But United remain favourites.
They have the depth, relative to their opponents, to cope with their multiple campaigns, and there is no one better than Ferguson at pulling a side back from such calamities.
They can grind out performances, crucial in the EPL.
Remember, too, they have a four-point gap and a game in hand.
But they aren’t that sure bet they once looked and you have to wonder what effect those jitters will have on their quintuple campaign, especially in Europe where they can’t afford such performances against the likes of Barcelona and Liverpool.
And just imagine if United did draw Liverpool in the Champions League this Friday?
Ferguson must be dreading such a tie after such a defeat at home. With Liverpool doing the double over their great rivals, they have the psychological edge over United.
The result from Old Trafford certainly adds extra spice to the title campaign.
Meanwhile with Arsenal finding some form, led by the remarkable Andrey Arshavin, and Aston Villa faltering, the Gunners are back into the top four, fitting in a week in which the big four of the EPL confirmed their might with progression to the Champions League quarters.
Despite the twists and turns of the EPL title race, one thing remains constant: it will be the same four teams in that battle.

As a big Liverpool fan I can only hope we are still in with a chance, it was a fantastic win at Old Trafford. Fergusons comment about them being the better team was absurd. How could they have been the better team yet still lose 4-1 ??. United’s key remaining games against City, Arsenal and Villa are all at home. For Liverpool ( and Chelsea ) to have any chance we need to keep winning and one of those three teams will need to jag a win at Old Trafford. Ultimately I think too many draws particularly at home will be the difference for L’pool. Drawing twice with Stoke was ridiculous. Anyway here’s hoping United’s quest for 6 trophies will pre occupy them and a couple of slip ups to give the scousers a chance !.

The 4 point lead and game in hand (against Portsmouth) should be enough.
The only question is if the extra games United have played this season will start to take their toll on the players? Keep in mind that they have played in the UEFA Super Cup, the Club World Cup and more Carling Cup games than Chelsea and Liverpool.
I just wonder how much effect this is going to have on them in the run in. They hardly have a difficult draw over the next few weeks, with Aston Villa at home appearing to be the biggest challenge. However the reason this question is pertinent in my mind is down to Ferguson’s team selection on Saturday. In all of the ‘big’ games United have played this season, Giggs and/or Scholes have started. Against Liverpool on Sunday, they were warming the bench. It was a strange selection, as was Tevez. The first sign to me that Ferguson may be a little wary of the workload of certain individuals in his squad. it is the price you pay for being as successful as United have been this season.
Being a Chelsea fan, I was very happy with the results over the weekend. I don’t believe United will win all of the trophies on offer. Not after their recent performances. The Champions League draw on Friday will be very intriguing. And thank god the Premier League is still alive too…

Ok, great result to give Chelsea and Liverpool some hope, but we are getting a bit ahead of ourselves if we think the title race is suddenly back on after one match. For either Chelsea or Liverpool to win the title, Man Yoo would have to lose as many games as they have all season while one of the two chasers has to virtually win all of their remaining nine games. A big ask.
As a Chelsea supporter I of course have my fingers crossed that we can pull off a miracle.
On the UCL draw, I think if ManYoo get Liverpool they’ll be gone. In fact, whoever draws Liverpool will probably lose, except for maybe Porto or Villarreal. Liverpool always seem to struggle against the weaker teams for some reason.

Liverpool have definitely gotten themselves back into the title race – I can not wait for the next couple of games to see how things pan out.

Yeh, I think that’s right Kaz.

Pippinu
I’ve been pretty busy with work, study and my other interests lately so I haven’t been playing as much. 10 games to go in the MLS minor rounds and I’m top of the league overall and cruising. I’ve only lost once, conceding 8 goals in 20 matches and I’ve still got 7 games at home to play.
We made the semis of the SuperLiga and lost 2-1 in ET to eventual winners Pumas. Next match is the US Cup final against Rochester Rhinos, a second division side, so I’ll probably have to go all out attack – they’ll park the bus. If they take the game to penalties I’ll lose for sure. Have you won a penalty shootout yet in FM09? I’m 0 from 9.
The playoffs against Japan are two months away so no progress with the UAE yet.
What have you been up to?

0 from 9?! that’s hilarious!
yeh, I reckon I’ve won more than I’ve lost (including that stupid pan-pacs final, and 3rd place in the WCC) – but the teams I’ve had have had decent penalty takers (but to be honest – whenever it goes to penalties – I groan – it’s so boring!!)
I’m up to season 5 in the A-League (2012-13) – did I ever tell you that I was sacked by MV before the start of last season??
This was after I had won the ACL and 3 championships!! I just wanted an extra $10,000 to buy a gun player and I gave them an ultimatum! They immediately hired Farina and the Roar hired me (and I took them to the championship and ACL ahead of MV, heh, heh…)

Well, I’m home and I’ve got some free time, so I thought I’d see what happened – Rochester parked the bus, it went to penalties, and guess what – finally a win! I made sure to keep all of my best penalty takers on the pitch and all of my players scored while my opponent missed their first kick. I used the arrowhead for the whole match but my opponents just clogged everything up and rode their luck, cheap flukey little buggers. Too bad for them I walked away with the cup anyway. Guess I had to win one eventually.
Yeah, you told me that you got sacked. Guess you showed them! Any overseas or national team aspirations yet, or are you keen to stay in the A-League and keep collecting toilet seats and ACLs?

I’d love to get an offer – but none are forthcoming – even though I’m on top of the Asian all time great coaches list!
I love the arrow heard! I’m going to pull it out tonight. I use it everytime I play Perth because they play with three defenders, wing backs, and three across the middle – it’s ideally set up for the arrow head!!

You might have to resign and start applying for jobs or declaring your interest. I think some clubs are put off paying the compensation fees to your current club. I was jobless when I signed for Ebbsfleet and San Jose.
Might want to save your game in a new file before you try that – it might backfire and you’ll be on the dole queue, or should that be working for Fox Sports / SBS, for a while.
