Brisbane Roar defender Andrew Packer has quit the A-League club to join the Australian Defence Force. The 29-year-old right-back, who was part of Sydney FC’s A-League championship side in 2006, told the Roar on Monday he was hanging up his boots, and had already started his basic training.

Brisbane Roar chief executive Peter McLennan said the news had come as a shock to the club.

“Andrew has been a great servant to Brisbane Roar,” McLennan said.

“He’s achieved many honours domestically and he was renowned as one of the true gentlemen of the game.”

Coach Ange Postecoglou said Packer had served the Roar well and wished him success in his new venture.

“I’m sure he’ll be extremely successful just as he was throughout his football career,” said Postecoglou.

Packer played 87 A-League games, 67 of those for the Roar and also won two NSL titles with Sydney Olympic and Perth Glory.
