An open letter to Steve Nash from a Mavs fan

Dear Steve Nash, I don’t personally know you but from what I have gathered, you seem like a nice guy.

You are also one of the best point guards in the world, even though you are Canadian and you are 38.

You used to play for my team the Dallas Mavericks, but back then I was too young to appreciate just how good you were at the Mav’s. Then I started watching you play when you were at the Suns, you just have this special gift of making your team members play better. So when I heard you are going to the Los Angeles Lakers, I was kind of upset.

Remember your old mate Dirk? You guys were the best white duo in the history of basketball, both among the greatest imports the NBA has had. Kevin McHale and Larry Bird were great together but you guys managed to slightly edge them out. I supposed you read Dirk’s interview in May when he said he is ‘like the grandfather of Dallas sports right now’ and that he is just too old to go through the whole team rebuilding phrase.

He said he has got two, may be three good years left in him and he wants to make one last solid go for the title. Did you get the drunken phone call from Dirk, like Bill Simmons said you would, before you decided you are going to Los Angeles?

You were at the Suns for that long because you are one of the most loyal players in the league, a rare species in this day and age when getting a ring seems to be everything. You know Dirk is going to do the same, but surely you understand what he is about to go through, trying so hard to win with some mediocre players and just can’t seem to succeed.

Obviously I personally want you to sign with the Mavericks, but I was okay with you going to the Toronto Raptors. After all, you are at the final stage of your career, going back to Canada seems to be the right choice, not only will you get the highest offer, but you will also be able to set yourself up with an administrative role at the organisation after you retire, not to mention how much this will mean for the development of the sport in Canada.

Sometimes a guy has to take care of himself. I understand if you choose not to sign with Dallas. After all, Mark Cuban was the man who let you go in 2006 when you wanted to stay. He was the guy who disrespected you, arguing you were too old and too much of a risk for the contract offer that you wanted.

Things could have gotten ugly, but being a graceful player that you are, you never publicly spoken out about this, instead you proved him wrong with your game. I completely understand why you didn’t sign with Dallas, seeing as you weren’t even their first choice when most teams would be lucky to have you as a starting point guard.

But if you read this, do tell me, did you make your final decision because Mark Cuban would rather stay in Los Angeles, filming his Shark Tank show than to plead his case in person, thus disrespecting you for the last time?

What I don’t understand is why you have to choose the Los Angeles Lakers? I mean you are going to play for Kobe Bryant’s team, the same guy who once said ‘plain and simple, I do not like them…I. Will. Not. Forget. That. I. Don’t. Care, I won’t let it go’ when he was asked about Steve Nash’s Suns.

Kobe doesn’t like you, if he is in a position to choose, he wouldn’t have you on his team. He simply hates not having as many rings as Michael Jordan and he has accepted that you are the best guy that can get him that sixth ring next season.

Steve Nash, you are a likeable player, and I wholehearted wish that you will get a ring before hanging up you basketball shoes. But why do you have to do it with the Los Angeles Lakers?

Yours sincerely,

A Mavs fan.
