Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning has surpassed the touchdown pass record, formerly held by Green Bay legend Brett Favre, after throwing for three TDs in a game against the San Francisco 49ers.

He has now thrown 509 touchdown passes in total, ahead of Favre on 508, Dan Marino on 420 and Drew Brees on 374. New England quarterback Tom Brady sits on 372.

The 38-year-old, who has been on fire so far this season, hit Demaryius Thomas to break the record, after earlier throwing to receivers Wes Walker and Emmanuel Sanders.

Having played at the top level of the sport since 1998, the veteran threw 399 of his touchdown passes in his 13 years at the Colts, but has been similarly prolific since joining the Broncos in 2012.

After a difficult first year at the Broncos, 2013 saw him claim his fifth MVP crown, and break the NFL record for touchdown passes and the franchise record for yardage.

Now sitting alone at the top of the touchdown passing record, who knows where Manning will go.

He is in the middle of a five-year deal with the franchise which is due to expire in 2016. By that stage he will be 40, and could easily have thrown for over 600 TDs.

Manning is a five-time league MVP, and Super Bowl winner with the Colts. His 18 jersey at Indianpolis was retired after he was cut in 2011.
