Match preview

Will Bernard Tomic be able to set up a possible second round matchup with Lleyton Hewitt with a win over Bosnian Damir Dzumhur? Join The Roar for live scores from around 6:00am (AEST) following the completion of Francesca Schiavone and Yanina Wickmayer.

Bernard Tomic has struggled to hit his straps lately and Dzumhur will prove to be a test of his progress.

He has never been past the second round and is in a great position to have the best US Open in his career; with a win he will either face off against Aleksandr Nedovyesov or fellow Australian Lleyton Hewitt.

The Gold Coast product has been keeping his head low recently, but is in for a huge tournament.

Dzumhur has faced off against Roger Federer at his past two grand slams and will no doubt want to push past the first round with a win over Tomic and prove himself as a rising star. The Bosnian however hasn’t really posed a threat on the ATP circuit and has spent more time dominating the Challenger Tour than he has testing himself against tennis’ elite.

Tomic and Dzumhur have never played each other. Tomic has a win-loss record of 7-3 in his last ten matches and is coming off a loss in straight sets to Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-4, 6-1.

Dzumhur was defeated by Ryan Haviland in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 as part of his lead-up to the US Open. He has a win-loss record of 3-7 in his last ten matches.

Prediction
Tomic will be far too strong for Dzumhur and look to set up a matchup with fellow Australian Lleyton Hewitt.

Tomic in straight sets.
