Greater Western Sydney have traded Curtly Hampton to the Adelaide Crows, and will receive Adelaide’s 2016 second round pick in exchange.

Hampton requested a trade away from the Giants in September after struggling for oppotunities this year. He managed just five games for the Giants in 2015.

The Giants recruited Hampton as part of their initial list through the Northern Territory zone that they briefly had access to as part of their establishment concessions.

He was a regular in the Giants side for his first three years at the club but the Giants’ increasing depth of talent saw him fall out of the best side this year.

He finishes his time at the Giants having played a total of 51 games for the club.

“Curtly is an outstanding young man and has come a long way since joining the Giants in 2010,” said Giants’ general manager of football Graeme Allan.

“Unfortunately this season he wasn’t able to play as much senior football as he would have liked so hopefully this trade can facilitate more opportunities for him.

“Securing a second-round pick in the 2016 NAB AFL Draft puts us in a good position to explore further options at the end of next season.

“We thank Curtly for his time at the Giants and wish him well for the future.”

Previously playing mostly off the half-back flank, Hampton could move to a different position at the Crows, either on the wing or at half-forward.

“I was a Crows fan as a kid, so I’m really excited to be here,” Hampton said about joining the Crows.

“I was at the Giants for five years and made a lot of good mates, but I thought it was best for me and my footy that I made the change.

“I really want to come in and cement my place at the club with hard work. I’ll get to know all the boys and build relationships with them and the coaches. I can’t wait to get started in pre-season.”

The Crows’ head of football David Noble is confident Hampton will be a valuable player for the side.

“Curtly is a quality young man with enormous potential,” Noble said.

“We’ve seen glimpses of what he can do at AFL level and it’s really exciting. We think Curtly gives us some flexibility at half-back or half-forward, and can also play wing/midfield.

“We’re looking forward to seeing what he can do with a big pre-season under his belt. Hopefully, he can help provide a bit of the outside run and speed we’ve been looking for.”

The Giants will be happy to have received a future second round pick in exchange for Hampton which should set them up well for the 2016 draft.

They are again expected to bring in a large number of talented academy players in that draft, making an additional pick all the more valuable.
