The Carlton Blues have made two trades in short order which sees a total of six players change clubs as well as a shuffling of draft picks.

In the first trade, Carlton sent Troy Menzel to the Adelaide Crows, who secured him in exchange for Sam Kerridge and pick 28.

Then in the second trade, the Blues sent picks 28, 77, 95, and the first-round pick they gained from Geelong for Lachie Henderson to Greater Western Sydney, receiving pick 8 in return, as well as Lachie Plowman, Liam Sumner, Andrew Phillips and Jed Lamb.

The Crows are thrilled to have secured South Australian Menzel who has kicked 47 goals from 40 games with the Blues in three years at the club since being taken at pick 11 in the 2012 draft.

“Troy was a first-round draft pick only a few years ago,” said Crows head of football David Noble.

“He’s played some really good footy at AFL level and, at only 21 years of age, has plenty of scope for improvement.

“Troy will add another dimension to our dynamic forward and midfield lines and we think he can develop the flexibility to play in other positions.

“It’s always nice to be able to bring a South Aussie home too.”

While the Blues lost a talented player in Menzel, they were able to secure five talented prospects from GWS and also turn their future pick form Geelong into a top ten selection at this year’s draft.

It gives Carlton picks 1, 8, 20 and 21 coming into this year’s draft, and they will likely gain another high pick from Richmond in exchange for Chris Yarran.

“Trading Lachie for a future pick afforded us some flexibility. By on-trading the rights to it we’ve now cemented another valuable selection inside the top 10 of this year’s draft,” said Blues list manager Stephen Silvagni.

“We always wanted a first round pick for Lachie and this new deal guarantees our return. In essence, we have secured pick eight for him.

“In addition, we’ve secured four young men with great potential. Among them are three former first round draft picks, each with the benefit of having some AFL experience under their belt.

“Bringing in four young players, all hungry for opportunity, is in line with our strategy. I have no doubt these players will develop and grow under new coach Brendon Bolton.”

The Giants lost pick 8 in the deal, but are expected to gain pick 7 from Collingwood before the trade period ends. They will also be happy to have gained a future first-round selection in next year’s draft.

“With the introduction of trading future picks, we have implemented a strategy that ensures we are well placed this year and in a very strong position next year,” said Giants football manager Graeme Allan.

“We feel we’re well placed to achieve our desired outcomes at this year’s draft in addition to setting ourselves up for a productive draft period next year when a number of PM Capital Academy players will come through.

“We are set for a strong return at this year’s draft and as one of the youngest lists in the AFL we see an opportunity to build currency in next year’s draft and trade periods.”
