From football hero to Hollywood star to infamous accused murderer: Muted tributes for OJ Simpson
The extraordinary episodes after his life as an American Football hero quite overshadowed the career of O.J. Simpson, who has died at the age…
Jarryd Hayne’s NFL career has spanned just six games, but his future in the league is in doubt after the San Francisco 49ers removed him from their playing roster on Sunday morning (AEDT).
The 49ers opted to waive the former rugby league star in order to promote running back Kendall Gaskins to the active roster.
The move places Hayne on the NFL market, meaning there is potential for him to be picked up by one of the other 31 NFL clubs.
Since Hayne was placed on the inactive roster, there have been murmurings in the US media that the Seattle Seahawks, who were one of the initial teams to show interest in the former Eel, would be well placed to pick him up.
However, if there is no interest shown in Hayne over the next 48 hours, speculation surrounding a return to the NRL will quickly build.
His US agent, Jack Bechta, took to Twitter in the wake of the announcement to provide some clarity around the situation:
Jarryd will most likely be back to work on Mon or Tues either with the Niners or another team. he has to clear waivers now over next 48 hrs.

the NFL waiver system gives 31 other teams the right to claim a non vested player. the claiming order goes from current worst record to best

when teams waive a player on a Sat its usually a sign they r trying 2 sneak them thru waivers. harder 4 others 2 make claim over the weekend

The following is a statement posted to the 49ers’ website:
The San Francisco 49ers announced on Saturday that they have promoted RB Kendall Gaskins to the active roster from the team’s practice squad. In order to make room on the roster, the team has waived RB Jarryd Hayne.
Gaskins (6-1, 238) originally signed with the 49ers to the team’s practice squad on September 1, 2014, where he spent the remainder of the season. He signed a reserve/future contract with San Francisco on December 30, 2014, was released on September 5, 2015, and then signed to the practice squad the following day.
A 24-year-old native of Burlington, NJ, Gaskins attended the University of Richmond where he totaled 605 rushing yards on 148 carries, as a senior. He finished his career second all-time in total rushing touchdowns (38) in school history. Gaskins earned First-Team All-Colonial Conference honors in 2010 and 2012.
Gaskins will wear number 30.
Hayne (6-2, 220) signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent on March 3, 2015. He appeared in six games this season and registered eight carries for 25 yards and returned eight punts for 76 yards on special teams.
