After some significant concern that Australian cricket fans would have no way to watch the World T20 tournament, some excellent news has come through today that the Nine Network and Fox Sports will partner to broadcast the 2016 tournament, which starts in just two days.

The arrangement effectively replicates the past relationship between the two stations regarding previous cricket tournaments, such as the ODI world cup which they jointly broadcasted last year.

Fox will show 35 World T20 matches live, while the Nine Network will show every match involving Australia live, and will also show the final of the tournament live, regardless of whether or not Australia is involved.

Coverage will begin on Fox Sports on Tuesday March 8, with a double-header of Zimbabwe vs Hong Kong followed by Scotland vs Afghanistan.

Australia will not be sighted until March 18 as the tournament features a quick round-robin for world cricket’s less established teams who are given the chance to qualify for the main groups before the competition begins in earnest.

Australia are in a group with hosts India, New Zealand and Pakistan, and will be joined by one qualifier from the group of Bangladesh, the Netherlands, Ireland and Oman.

The side will face New Zealand in their first match of the tournament on March 18.

Fox Sports’ coverage of the tournament will also include the broadcasting of 10 Women’s World T20 matches. There have been no details specifically on which matches these will be, but it seems likely that those with Australian participation will be the focus.

The news means Australian fans will have the opportunity to watch as Steve Smith and the rest of the Australian side look to pursue the one international trophy that has so far consistently eluded them.

The team are currently in South Africa playing a three-match T20 series against the locals, who won the first match of that series early yesterday morning, with the second set to start late tonight (AEDT).
