One game can only mean so much, but this game will tell us more about the flag race than most.

The Dogs started the year in mighty form, and while they remain among the top few teams, injuries have taken the gloss off their charge a bit.

The Eagles, also with a 7-3 record, are clearly among the league’s best teams, but haven’t yet had a win against another premiership contender.

One of these teams will emerge this evening with their 2016 credentials significantly boosted.

Both sides had wins last week and have retained fairly stable sides.

The Bulldogs have made no change at all, while the Eagles regain Elliot Yeo and Andrew Gaff to field something near their strongest team.

This game could be seen as the battle of the backlines. The Bulldogs have conceded the fewest points of any team this season and West Coast are known for their distinctive defensive structure. This probably won’t be a particularly high-scoring match.

The home team boast some of the league’s most in-form midfielders, with Lachie Hunter, Luke Dahlhaus and Tom Liberatore enjoying strong seasons. Jack Macrae was also good last week.

Matt Priddis, Gaff and Luke Shuey headline an equally-strong engine room for the visitors.

The Eagles’ forward line, spearheaded by Josh J Kennedy, could well be the deciding factor. Marcus Adams has been impressive in his debut season and is likely to get that job.

All in all this is a tough game to predict, but when in doubt tip the home team, and the Dogs record at Etihad is certainly a strong one.
