Match preview:

South Africa will be desperately looking to bounce back from a historic loss to Italy last week when they do battle with an equally struggling Wales outfit. Join The Roar from 4:30am (AEDT) for all the live scores, highlights and rugby action.

The Springboks have equalled their worst two years of all time with their seventh loss of 2016 to Italy last week.

The Proteas suffered their first defeat in ten years to England a couple of weeks ago following a shaky appearance against the Barbarians before the defeat to Italy.

It was also their first ever loss to the Azzurri as they slipped to a 20-18 loss, heaping a mountain of pressure onto coach Allister Coetzee before the World Cup draw next year.

Wales have been far from terrible as of late, picking up wins over Japan and Argentina throughout the November internationals, but they were less than convincing performances for the Welsh.

They just snuck past the Japanese last week to win by three points thanks to a Sam Davies drop goal in the last minute of the game.

While main head coach Warren Gatland is off as the leader of the British and Irish Lions side, interim coach Rob Howley has spoken of a need for improved performances from his men.

“There is the tinge of disappointment in terms of performance against Japan and we want to put that right,” said Howley.

“Not only are we looking to win this weekend, we want a performance to go with it.”

History is certainly against the Welsh, having lost 28 times to the Springboks from 31 meetings, but seven of the last nine games have been decided by six points or less.

Wales also have plenty of concerns in the points department, having conceded an average of 33 points per game in their last seven internationals.

South Africa haven’t won a single game away from home in 2016 either.

Team News
Wales will be without their skipper Sam Warburton after he suffered a shoulder injury at training, forcing Howley to make one change to his line-up.

Dan Lydiate has been brought into the back row as his replacement alongside Ross Moriarty and Justin Tipuric.

Leigh Halfpenny has been shifted to fullback after sitting on the wing against Japan, pushing Liam Williams onto the wing. Gethin Jenkins will take up the captaincy.

South Africa have made a host of changes in the hopes of avoiding a record eight defeat for the year.

Springboks legend Bryan Habana has been dropped for the clash as coach Coetzee brings in three debutants, Jamba Ulengo, Uzair Cassiem and Rohan Janse van Rensburg.

Flanker Willem Alberts has failed to recover from a neck injury and has been ruled out. Johan Goosen takes Willie le Roux’s spot at fullback with Jamba Ulengo taking Habana’s spot on the wing.

Prediction
Wales are coming into their home test as favourites against a South African side playing for dignity and possibly their coaches job.

It’s been a horror year for the Boks and their performances are nearly impossible to pick.

Wales have kept the majority of their squad throughout the Spring internationals and that cohesion has paid off for them.

Look for the home side to fall behind early against an eager South African side, but the men in red should take the cake in the second half to top off a big year of rugby.
