One of just three teams from the old NSL to appear in the A-League, the Newcastle Jets won their first championship in 2007/08 after beating their great rivals, the Central Coast Mariners, 1-0. The club has since found itself floating around the lower half of the competition and came under severe financial strain in the lead-up to the 2010/11 season. However, the Jets’ short-term future is now secured until at least 2020 after the club was resold to mining magnate Nathan Tinkler, and the club will look to a strong 11/12 season under continuing coach Branko Culina and marquee Jason Culina.

Gary van Egmond’s Jets crash and burn
by John Davidson, 3 Apr 2013
Gary van Egmond sat slumped and defeated in his chair on the Newcastle bench, seemingly resigned to his fate, as the Western Sydney Wanderers romped home to claim the A-League premiership last Friday. Van Egmond’s muted display was an accurate reflection of the game, where the Wanderers never looked in doubt from the opening whistle [...]

With the A-League fixtures for next season set to be released tomorrow, featuring a live Friday night free-to-air fixture on SBS2 for the first time, it’s pertinent to ask what type of fixture should kick-off each weekend? Leave your A-League colours at the door for Australia
by Joe Gorman, 20 May 2013
It was a message that reverberated around the room last Thursday night, as fans from around New South Wales met at FFA headquarters in Sydney. Active support for the Socceroos is undergoing a renaissance, one that is free from ties to A-League support bases and club loyalties. Anybody who has paid to watch the Socceroos [...]

Learning to love the AFC Champions League via Twitter
by Mike Tuckerman, 17 May 2013
The most enthralling fixture this week was arguably not the FA Cup final or even the Europa League decider, it was a game which took place in Asia hosted by an Australian team. Fans who tuned into the Central Coast Mariners’ absorbing 2-1 home defeat to Chinese side Guangzhou Evergrande in the first leg of [...]

He has one of the best footballing minds and is among the world’s most respected coaches but much of what Marcello Lippi had to say on the Central Coast on Tuesday seemed lost in translation. by dinoweb, 15 May 2013
Following on from my two-parter on the A-League’s club stats, I thought it was equally important to look at some player records. First up, the most number of clubs played for. Jeremy Brockie and Justin Passfield are the most travelled players to date, having represented five clubs each. Matt Thompson (Melbourne Heart) has the most [...]

The football continues at an historic Sydney derby
by Joe Gorman, 13 May 2013
Yesterday afternoon, one of Australia’s fiercest sporting rivalries was played in suburban Sydney. Fans weren’t there to see the Western Sydney Wanderers play Sydney FC, not even to see the Rabbitohs play the Roosters. This is a rivalry that stretches further back, traversing continents and generations. The A-League season is over, but the football continues. [...]
