One of just three teams from the old NSL to appear in the A-League, the Newcastle Jets won their first championship in 2007/08 after beating their great rivals, the Central Coast Mariners, 1-0. The club has since found itself floating around the lower half of the competition and came under severe financial strain in the lead-up to the 2010/11 season. However, the Jets’ short-term future is now secured until at least 2020 after the club was resold to mining magnate Nathan Tinkler, and the club will look to a strong 11/12 season under continuing coach Branko Culina and marquee Jason Culina.

Future of the Jets starts now
by janek.speight - January 22nd 2012 @ 3:58am
The future of the Jets now rests entirely on Gary van Egmond recruiting over the next off-season. But does he have the means and the guts to do what he must? An uncompromising attitude towards playing his style of football is clear, and now it’s up to him to determine which current players can fit [...]

Recollections of the A-League’s F3 derby
by Sports Freak - January 20th 2012 @ 7:00am
I traveled north from Sydney on Saturday to see the fascinating match between the Central Coast Mariners and the Newcastle Jets. This is not a slant on Melbournians, or Victory and Heart fans, but this is the A-League’s first and real derby. Anyone who knows NSW geography or with ties to this part of the [...]

Melbourne derby reveals tale of two journeys
by Robbie Di Fabio - February 10th 2012 @ 3:20am
It was intense, forceful and at times an affair devoid of its pretty nature. Conversely, the scoreless draw in this season’s third edition of the Melbourne derby illustrated the struggling constituents inundated around the rival A-League clubs. Whilst both outfits have experienced topsy-turvy campaigns, none were able to reap the bragging rights from last Saturday’s [...]
Midweek regional matches not hitting the mark
by Adrian Musolino - February 10th 2012 @ 3:20am
No midweek A-League this week? So accustomed have we become to Wednesday night football in the last two seasons, it just didn’t seem right having no live football to break up the week. Aside from the rescheduled Gold Coast United versus Central Coast Mariners match on Wednesday February 22, that’s it for midweek football in [...]

Hey, Victory! Give them kids a go
by Daniel Quinn - February 9th 2012 @ 3:52am
Where some criticised the Melbourne A-League derby as lacking excitement, one good thing that emerged was Melbourne Heart youngster Craig Goodwin. Goodwin had a fantastic game on the left side of the pitch in place of Aziz Behich, who is on Olyroo duty. The 20-year-old took his chance with both hands. I have watched Goodwin [...]
A-League coaches are saying but not doing
by Davidde Corran - February 9th 2012 @ 3:33am
Melbourne Victory’s position as the A-League’s biggest club was highlighted over the last week as interim coach Jim Magilton continued to make headlines. From debate over his British heritage through to whether it is he or the players who should hold responsibility for recent results, it seems every aspect of the 42-year-old’s time south of [...]

A-League’s tough expansion lessons can boost game
by Beau Busch - February 8th 2012 @ 3:17am
Talk of A-League growth to Tasmania has raised the issue of expansion for the sport into new markets, with opinions divided on the wisdom of doing so. With the death of the North Queensland Fury and the struggles of Gold Coast United off the pitch, the difficulties in expanding the competition have been clearly demonstrated. [...]
The problem with Melbourne Victory’s ‘hole’ season
by anthcol - February 7th 2012 @ 7:41am
Whether it be through tactical ineptitude or players not following instructions, Melbourne Victory play their football with not enough emphasis on the most dangerous position on the park. The central attacking midfield position has been criminally ignored all season by the A League’s most disappointing team. Carlos Hernandez and before him Fred played this role [...]
