Paul “The Dude” Morris has plenty of critics, most of them his fellow V8 Supercar drivers.Every year he’s voted the dirtiest driver in the field by his peers but he never changes his ways.

And according to his Holden teammate Russell Ingall, he never should.

Ingall reckons Morris brings some much-needed aggro to the sport, as well as personality and humour and he’s attracting a cult following as a result.

Today the colourful pair clocked the fifth fastest time in opening practice for the iconic Bathurst 1000 and look every chance of threatening in Sunday’s Great Race.

“It’s looking good,” Morris said, before adding a few lines epitomising why Ingall thinks he’s good for V8 Supercars.

“I didn’t do much today, I sort of took one for the team and kicked back and let Russell drive the whole session.

“I’ll probably do the same tomorrow and might have a bit of a drive on Saturday, there’s an hour (practice) there.

“That’s my plan, to let him do all the work and then step in the car Sunday and pick up the trophy at the end of the day.”

Morris owns the team, a helicopter, wineries and numerous businesses but it’s his no fuss driving style which attracts the most attention.

“If someone’s in front of him who wants to block and carry on like an idiot – which a lot do in this category for 15th place – you think, ‘Mate, why bother? I’m faster than you so get out of the way or get ready for it’,” Ingall said.

“To be quite honest, that’s the right way of thinking. As soon as our category as a whole start realising that’s the way we should go racing it’s going to be better for the sport.”
