The Manly Sea Eagles celebrates their win over the Melbourne Storm in the NRL Grand Final

As the NRL season draws closer, everyone is talking favourites and Grand Final dreams are already loftier than expectations before a Year Nine school dance.

Gus Gould wrote on League HQ today that he rates the Sharks and Sea Eagles as title contenders, with an eye on the Broncos, Dragons and Warriors.

Not bad Gus.

But no surprise you’re onside with your old mate Ricky Stuart, despite the fact the Sharkies had a major meltdown in last year’s finals. And despite the fact they were whipped 40-16 by the Titans in last weekend’s trial game.

They’re looking rougher than Mickey Rourke right now!

It’s hard to argue against the Dragons pick, though. With Wayne Bennett steering the ship, the new look St George Illawarra side is powering on all cylinders.

Let’s just hope they don’t burn out too early.

And let’s not dismiss the Dogs either. They’re $26 on Sportsbet, which for our money is as tempting as a half time show at Brookvale.

Could the Titans be a dark horse, also? They looked dominant against the Sharks.

Though according to new Cronulla star signing, Trent Barrett, this trial was just to “clean out the cobwebs.” Fair enough, but right now the team needs a bloody big broom and an industrial size can of Mr Sheen.
