Brisbane coach Ivan Henjak has scuttled rumours of any rift between Shane Webcke and the Broncos. Webcke stepped down as a Broncos assistant coach on Monday as the fallout from his controversial book, Hard Road, continued.
Henjak said on Tuesday while he disagreed with Webcke’s reasons for quitting his coaching staff, he respected the club’s former great for doing what he felt was right.
Henjak, though, admitted when the contents of Webcke’s book first came to light there were some disappointed people at the NRL club.
“It all got dragged up again,” said Henjak.
“But we’re a team, and a lot of the those players have played with Webbie.
“What we do as a team is we forgive each other.
“We all make mistakes and we move on and that’s what we’ve done.
“There’s no fallout from the book and there’s no hard feelings towards Webbie.
“When he came in yesterday we were all surprised but all very supportive of him.”
Henjak wasn’t surprised the Gold Coast Titans had quickly offered Webcke a coaching position alongside John Cartwright and Trevor Gillmeister.
“Shane would be a great asset to any place,” he said.
“But he’s not leaving us totally. He’s still going to work with the club in a corporate capacity. He’ll still be around the place supporting us.”
Conspiracy theorists were trying to make a connection between Webcke’s book and the departures this week of Webcke, another of their favourite forwards Andrew Gee, who’s been with the club almost from day one as a player or administrator and veteran utility Michael De Vere, who has announced his retirement after on game back.
Henjak stressed Webcke had made the decision to step down on his own.
“He thought he’d let the players down but I don’t think that was necessarily the case,” Henjak said.
“But that’s how he felt.”
