Forget the GCF, Swine Flu could disrupt AFL and NRL seasons

In late April, an Under-17 soccer tournament in Tijuana, conducted by CONCACAF, was cancelled prior to the semi finals. The four semi-finalists had all clinched spots in the Under-17 World Cup set for October in Nigeria.

Now, with the Swine Flu spreading around Australia, and the fact that Australia is actually entering ‘flu’ season (unlike Mexico and the US), the potential for disruption to sports and the major codes is how big?

We now see this message on the South Morang football club website:

“Due to the a number of players at the South Morang Football Club suffering from Swine Flu, and several others being quarantined, this weekends match vs Epping and Saturday’s retro 80’s function have been cancelled.”

We’ve already had some minor scares for the Fremantle Dockers (who had to see the Fremantle Doctor?) and a handful of NRL refs.

What will be next? How many games and rounds may be cancelled or postponed? Would finals be pushed back, or entire rounds just written off? Or would we resort to games before empty stadiums?

How bad will it get?
