Abbreviations are ruling us these days. All cricket-lovers know what ICC, MCC, MCG, SCG, WACA, CA, CNSW, BCCI, IPL, ICL, and LBW, stand for. But a recent report saying “LBW raised $10,000 for charity for poor cricketers in Zimbabwe,” stumped me.

That is, until someone told me that the LBW charity is an abbreviation for Living for a Better World.

When a problem gets solved, another surfaces.

Mitchell Johnson bowled badly in last month’s Lord’s Test because he had WAGS (Wife And Girl friend Syndrome). BTW (by the way), not only was this acronym puzzling, but also wrong.

BYAM (between you and me), Mitchell had MAGIC, short for Mother And Girl Friend Induced Conflict.

To add to the acronym confusion, I read a recent report saying that the Indian cricketers (supported by BCCI) have refused to give their whereabouts to WADA.

Wisden, the bible of cricket, could not reveal to me what WADA meant until I deciphered the acronym. WADA stands for World Anti-Doping Agency.

Until last week, I suffered from acronym-phobia.

Bad as it sounds, it is better than the Onion-phobia the Australian batsmen have become prone to. It brings tears to their eyes and they misread his swing.

From a novice at interpreting acronyms, I have turned overnight into a maniac at coining new ones. If you can’t beat them, join them!

As it rained non-stop on Day Three of the Edgbaston Test, I came up with some meaningful acronyms.

I challenge The Roar webbers and bloggers, experts and commenters to decipher them:

1. PLUTO, 2. SCIFA, 3. PhD, 4. BODANT and 5. WIBH.

Given up? They stand for:

1. Ponting Lost Us Test Overnight.
2. Stuart Clark Is Forgotten Again.
3. Phil Hughes Dumped.
4. Bradman One Day, Axed Next Test. (Hughes’ lament.)
5. Where Is Brad Hodge? (Aussies’ lament.)

Can you come up with better ones?

Who know, one day we’ll have Roar’s Sporting Acronyms, just as we have Roget’s Thesaurus.
