There was a kid running around at Etihad Stadium last night that John Van’t Schip and the new Melbourne Heart franchise – Melbourne’s second A-League team – must take notice of.

Young striker Matthew Leckie has been one of Adelaide United’s shining lights, not only in last night’s match against the Victory, but also in the preceding games. So much so that he has begun to cement a regular spot in Aurelio Vidmar’s starting line up.

As Van’t Schip and Melbourne’s newest sporting team begin to build a playing roster which aims to be both competitive and successful in their debut 2010-2011 season, Adelaide United youngster Matthew Leckie must be a key target and a key component of the Dutchman’s inaugural squad. Aside from the club’s ‘marquee player’– which has become mandatory for a club these days in order to create a culture and identity – the youngster from Bulleen must be considered as a very high priority for the new franchise.

Any team needs a blend of youth and experience, and youngster Leckie brings not only the youth that is needed but also an enormous amount of talent, potential and pace. The striker, who has been dubbed ‘Mini-Travis’ by his teammates for his similar attributes to Adelaide skipper Travis Dodd, originates from Victoria, and a place at a professional A-League club in his home town would be a perfect and comfortable fit for Leckie.

Van’t Schip and his men would be crazy to overlook the youngster and not even try securing the services of the striker. And one hopes there is the right network of staff and support around the Dutchman to channel his recruiting into some of our home grown talent and not just focus on those plying their trade abroad.
