How to keep NRL players in the game

In the wake of the Jonathon Thurston story about wanting to sign with the ARU, I’ve been thinking about incentives the NRL could use to keep players in the game.

My suggestions are:

1. the NRL pays a percentage of the salary of the top 32 players in the comp up to 300,000. These 32 players are made up of two from each club who are nominated by their club. For example, Brisbane may pick Lockyer and Folau, the Warriors may pick Mannering and McKinnon, the Tigers may pick Farrah and Marshall, and so on.

2. introduce a marquee player system, like the one the A-League has.

3. offer salary cap exemptions for players who been with a club for a number of years. For example, 10 percent exemption for players who’ve been with a club (in the top 25 squad) for five years and 25 percent for ten years.

4. give salary cap exemptions for local juniors. This may disadvantage some clubs, like my own Roosters, but it would also encourage them to spend more money setting up a local junior base.

5. pay milestone bonuses to players who reach 150, 200, 250 and 300 first grade matches. This money would go into the players Super funds for when their careers are over

Any more idea?
