As the sun set on Vancouver in a blaze of fireworks and celebration, we, as sports lovers, can look back on the Winter Games with a sense of amazement about the sporting ability on display.

Torah Bright cemented her position as the world’s best snowboarder after years of debate; Lindsay Vonn was outstanding on the slopes; while Johnny Weir was the star of the rink.

Australia showed why we are regarded as a sports nation, and the performance of Canada as a host nation boosted the spirits of a nation yearning for success.

Still, there were sour notes at the Olympics that were cause for criticism.

The Sliding Centre was a disaster, as it killed one and nearly killed many more with its lightning fast track which was too dangerous. The IOC were reckless in their handling of the centre.

Our TV coverage was poor, with Foxtel holding sports fans to ransom and Channel Nine showing scant live coverage while offending the Gay and Lesbian community and making a mockery of their stance as the leader in sports coverage.

The decision to place the Olympic flame in the heart of Vancouver was a brilliant idea, but to cover it up with fence was a ridiculous concept based on paranoia and fear of protest.

Overall, the 2010 Winter Olympics were a fantastic exposition of sportsmanship and endeavour.

Sochi in 2014 has big shoes to fill and I am certainly looking forward to seeing what the Russians can do. So I toast Vancouver, Canada and the IOC for its work and look forward to London 2012.
