FFA must get serious about marquee players

As a born amd bred Wednesday fan, I’ve had to listen to the worship of those who follow Man U, Liverpool, Arsenal and now Chelsea supporters.

Some grew up with those clubs, but many are either offspring of that group or Australian born, who let’s face it, have attached themselves to the success of these clubs.

Whether that annoys me or not is irrelevant.

However, in relation to an A-League Marquee player, it’s blindingly obvious that amongst football fans in Australia, they are the majority.

If the FFA wants to be serious about the Marquee business, meaning Marquee = Bums On Seats, then it has to get prominent players from these clubs. Or a world-renowned player from another of the big leagues, such as Messi or Ronaldo, in their twilight football years.

Last season clubs such as SFC and PG added 3,000 to their average gate when NQF played them. Why? No rocket science. Robbie Fowler.

Last season at the Roar v NQF, I sat next to several youths wearing Liverpool shirts shouting for Robbie Fowler to produce some magic.

When we got 23,000 in the first season against SFC, many Man U shirts were seen due to Dwight Yorke. All clubs benefited then also when SFC visited.

The time has come for the FFA to put up or shut up regarding the Marquee player.
