Lockyer's State of Origin time is up

There has been much debate over the past month as to Darren Lockyer and his decision to continue his representitive career. Many former league legends came out and said “they hoped he would give it away” or “finish on a winning note.”

But were these familiar lines, simply covering up what they truly meant?

I personally would not have picked Darren Lockyer for State of Origin last season. Discount the fact he was injured at the time, even at full fitness on the form he showed last year, he wouldn’t have been wearing the Queensland number 6.

Scott Prince had a good a year, as ever, and I felt he should have been rewarded.

I am not privy to the confines of the Brisbane Broncos or the Queensland Origin side, but you constantly hear of his leadership and there’s no questioning his experience, but is Queensland that reliant on it these days?

I argue that the loss of Thurston, Inglis, or even Civonaceva would be more damaging than that of Lockyer.

But in a superstar laden team like Queensland, it is hard for weaknesses to show as glaring as they do with the Brisbane Broncos.

Lockyer again has been poor in 2010. He is playing with a young and inexperienced side, which is duly noted, but his statistics are not so different from 2009.

I would rank Prince, Thurston and Cronk all ahead of him, in pure football terms. And although Loyalty, Leadership and Experience will ensure, if fit, Lockyer will wear the Queensland jersey, will such loyalty and leadership exist if Queensland find themselves staring down the barrel of a series loss or whitewash?

I may be left with egg on my face come the Origin series this year, and if so, I will gladly wear it. But has Lockyer gone on too long??
