After the capping of five new All Blacks, the spotlight has been placed upon the selectors and Graham Henry’s choice of players, with some sectors applauding and others puffing out their chests in disdain.

Aaron Cruden has received the full glare of this publicity from his promotion to the national side, after serving the first stanza of his first season warming the bench for Wellington. The back-up for the number 10 jersey, occupied by Dan Carter, is a pivotal position, so some are aghast at this seemingly premature ascension.

But those close to Cruden claim he’s a smart footballer and his performance and leadership in the Junior World Cup 2009 was class. Cruden had to reach up to grab the faster, tougher game found in the Super 14 arena, and was somewhat humorously, and yet cruelly, winded for a full two minutes in his first touch of the ball (with the eyes of the rugby world watching).

But there was also the Cruden that cut through the defensive lines and offloaded splendidly as he progressed through the season. This is what caught the selector’s eyes – that and the beating of the drum to finally put the disastrous Donald experiment to rest.

So while Cruden, Vito and Dagg grabbed the attention of the media, a more stunning debut has taken place on the sidelines.

Rene Ranger, whose devastating runs caused shock and awe amongst the opposition, silenced commentators and caused crowds to rush for Blues tickets, has joined the All Black training squad as a “cover”player.

Ranger, while more than capable of breaking the line, also had a tendency to go alone, occasionally pass badly, and does possess a load of bad habits.

But his talent is undeniable and in an abundance.

Henry was never allowed to pick Ranger in the “squad,” as it is just too liberal for the New Zealamd public. By bringing him into this shadow squad, placing him under his wing, Ranger will be exposed to the secret world of All Black rugby and that is priceless.

It’s also a nod to the lad that all is well and next season he’s in touch of making the world cup squad. Moreso, Henry now has his royal flush in the making – Vito, Cruden and Ranger.

And that spells Danger Ranger for the Boks, France and Australia.

That Ted, hes a sly old dog.
