Unveiling Graham Henry’s secret weapons

After the capping of five new All Blacks, the spotlight has been placed upon the selectors and Graham Henry’s choice of players, with some sectors applauding and others puffing out their chests in disdain.
Aaron Cruden has received the full glare of this publicity from his promotion to the national side, after serving the first stanza of his first season warming the bench for Wellington. The back-up for the number 10 jersey, occupied by Dan Carter, is a pivotal position, so some are aghast at this seemingly premature ascension.
But those close to Cruden claim he’s a smart footballer and his performance and leadership in the Junior World Cup 2009 was class. Cruden had to reach up to grab the faster, tougher game found in the Super 14 arena, and was somewhat humorously, and yet cruelly, winded for a full two minutes in his first touch of the ball (with the eyes of the rugby world watching).
But there was also the Cruden that cut through the defensive lines and offloaded splendidly as he progressed through the season. This is what caught the selector’s eyes – that and the beating of the drum to finally put the disastrous Donald experiment to rest.
So while Cruden, Vito and Dagg grabbed the attention of the media, a more stunning debut has taken place on the sidelines.
Rene Ranger, whose devastating runs caused shock and awe amongst the opposition, silenced commentators and caused crowds to rush for Blues tickets, has joined the All Black training squad as a “cover”player.
Ranger, while more than capable of breaking the line, also had a tendency to go alone, occasionally pass badly, and does possess a load of bad habits.
But his talent is undeniable and in an abundance.
Henry was never allowed to pick Ranger in the “squad,” as it is just too liberal for the New Zealamd public. By bringing him into this shadow squad, placing him under his wing, Ranger will be exposed to the secret world of All Black rugby and that is priceless.
It’s also a nod to the lad that all is well and next season he’s in touch of making the world cup squad. Moreso, Henry now has his royal flush in the making – Vito, Cruden and Ranger.
And that spells Danger Ranger for the Boks, France and Australia.
That Ted, hes a sly old dog.

I thought it was Ranger Danger and the Danger Rangers – which one is Rene?
Interestingly this character was created by Kevin Smith, the owner of Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash – could this be a link to the author’s screen pseudonym?
To my mind, Vito, Cruden & Ranger sounds more ike a somewhat off-beat Italian Mafia Cowboy law firm.

the Kevin Smith tie-in does sound like a good theory….and that also does sound like a law firm…ha!

Ranger reminds me of a young Nonu, can back up a moment of brilliance with a moment of madness. Trust me, I want to see a fellow Taniwha make the AB’s but he is to loose for the top level against the Boks and Wallabies just yet.
Slightly of topic. Is Toulon NZ’s newest nemesis. The Boks and Wallabies are our traditional foes but Toulon seems to be thwarting the AB coaces just as much recently. I mean SBW is not going to turn down a reported $6 M big ones, bigger than Falou’s! I see Toulon have signed George Smith overnight as well.

Ranger makes to many mistakes and against test teams will give away points to often.

Slash… ‘also had a tendency to go alone’ Lone Ranger perhaps? Sorry couldn’t help it. Yup, I think Rene Ranger deserves to be there but would have him on the right wing. He’s a finisher and knows where the try line is.

I bet he “shows up to play” as well.

Blues and Chiefs don’t fire but all the talk is how unlucky they were. Be nice if the selectors went on form and not Auckland bias. Go thru the form line and the unluckiest players aren’t even getting a mention. Just lucky the Aussies still have the worst forward pack going around or we’d be in real trouble.

Something got lost between the crouch, touch, pause, engage. Where are all these Chiefs players you speak of? Henry is one of the least biased All Black selectors of modern times. Apparently, you don’t think any Auckland players should be selected. Am I to assume there’s no bias there?
Besides, Super 14 form is a weak means of selecting a Test side. If you picked an All Black side on Super 14 form it would be a disaster.

And this squad won’t be playing the Australia pack anyway.
Don’t you mean the Irish and Welsh packs? Are they still lucky?

Ranger also is in the midst of an assault charge – so that doesn’t sit too well with selectors.
The drum beats were getting louder for Ranger before the first squad was announced and the old boys network were starting to line up behind him – all wanting that Dangerous presence in the midfield.
Danger is cover for Mils and Kahui

Hmmm…that is strange reporting that Ranger is cover for Mils – he’s never going to be fullback? Ben Smith from the Highlanders was also called up into the AB training squad.

Cover for Mils?
Surely Dagg would be picked to start or is he injured?

Jane would be my option at fullback unless Henry wants to have two safe kicking options at the back in which case he can play Jane on the wing with Dagg at fullback. I’d prefer to see Jane at fullback with Roks and Guilford on the wings.

Jane has the inside running apparently with the way he’s been used in training today.

I hear Crusaders linging up to steel Dagg… If I was a billionaire id buy Dan Carter, McCaw and the rest of the good players for the highlanders and beat the hell out of the Crusaders!!!

Yeah – the Highlanders get the short stick on that one.
Still I’d rather keep players in New Zealand, even if they do swap around franchises, than have them going to Toulon.

Seems the NZRFU is contemplating implementing a salray cap of sorts across the NZ teams.
This is in relation to the money that they are distributing throughout the teams.
