Jack Reiwoldt kicked ten goals yesterday at the MCG to extend Richmond’s winning margin to 49-points over the West Coast Eagles.

Within minutes, the number 13 pick in the 2006 draft had his hands on the footy, lining up 45 meters out, on a slight angle to put his third on the board.

He finished the quarter with five goals.

West Coast Eagles coach, John Worsfold tried to stop Reiwoldt’s forward line dominance by dropping a spare man back in defence, creating a two on one contest. But Richmond coach Damien Hardwick had other ideas.

Hardwick pushed a seven man forward line, to ensure Reiwoldt wasn’t left to fend for himself.

Reiwoldt read the flight of the footy exceptionally well and stationed his body perfectly in the one-on-one contests. He dominated with his strength in the one-on-one contests ending up with the footy on most occasions.

After the game Reiwoldt said that: “It’s something I have been working on a lot over the past two years; it’s something I’m trying to add to my game”.

Reiwoldt was modest about his 10-goal match, explaining that, “I was lucky to get on the end of a few today and happy to kick straight”.

“It was just great to get the boys off to a good start, clearances wise we smashed them at the end of the day,” said Reiwoldt.

The 21-year old’s best performance prior to this afternoon was last year against Essendon, when he managed six goals.

The Tiger’s supporters who have been deprived of finals success over the past eight years made their presence known in the final term, evidently to Reiwoldt.

“I had a bit of a sneaky look at the scoreboard and saw there was 30,000 thousand in the ‘G’ today and in the last quarter it felt like there were 150,000.”

In the final quarter, with three minutes to go, Reiwoldt found himself 40 metres out on the verge of booting 10 goals for the match. He remained focused whilst he was lining up, despite joking about having a snap shot.

“I thought about running around and snapping it on the left, but went back and try to put it through and convert my teammate’s hard work up the ground,” Reiwoldt said.

In the current list of AFL players, only two others have kicked ten goals or more in one game. In 2005, St Kilda’s Stephen Milne booted 11 goals against the Brisbane Lions and then in 2007, Jonathan Brown kicked 10 goals against Carlton.

It was sensational to see Reiwoldt kick ten goals and celebrate the win with the boys singing passionately to the Richmond theme song.
