I have compiled a list of the ironies that have been brought to my attention as the World Cup progresses. They include:

1. The New Zealand “All Whites” are not all white. Winston Reid’s Maori origin ensures the Kiwis are always subject to this irony.

2. On the day that Keisuke Honda sent Japanese spirits skyrocketing, a Honda Motor Company strike saw profits plummet. Ironic.

3. In 1982, Honduras qualified for its first World Cup. That same year marked the signing of the nations constitution. 27 years on, Honduras clinched a second World Cup appearance, this time, during a time of political unrest and turmoil that saw the same constitution pushed to be re-written. Rather ironic.

4. A friend of Cristiano Ronaldo let slip that growing up in Portugal, Cristiano prided himself on his diving ability down at the local swimming area. It seems you never lose old habits.

5. The youth filled Slovakian outfit also boasts a high number of players with receding hair lines. An unfortunate irony for them.

6. After their gallant loss to Brazil, the bookies left North Korea reeling at $701 for the World Cup win. Those same odds capitulate Kim Jong-il’s chances of turning to a democracy. Ironic for some, devastating for others.

7. The colour green represents being cautious in every situation. Robert Green overcompensated just a tad. Sorry England, that one’s ironic.
