In a shocking move, Duke University head coach Mike Krzyzewski has revealed freshman point guard Kyrie Irving will play in the NCAA tournament.
“There is a chance that he would play, but the decision won’t be made for a few days”, Krzyzweski said during a pre-tournament press conference. It has since been confirmed that Irving will take the floor in the first round of the tournament.
Number one seeded Duke will play Hampton on Saturday morning (Australian time) in Charlotte for the first round.
Irving will not start in this game and will only play limited minutes.
Sophomore guards Seth Curry and Andre Dawkins are likely to lose some playing time with Irving’s return.
Irving hasn’t played since early December after injuring his big toes in the Blue Devil’s game against Butler.
The freshman, who was averaging 17.4PPG and 6.1 in eight games, is currently atop most NBA scouts’ draft boards.
If Irving can make a promising showing in the tournament, it is likely he would be taken number one overall in the coming NBA draft.
