Australia’s women footballers have reached their highest ever world ranking, breaking into the top ten.

Following their strong showing at the recent FIFA Women’s World Cup in Germany the Matildas jumped two places from equal 11th (with Italy) to ninth in the rankings announced in Zurich on Friday.

With men’s team, the Socceroos, currently sitting at 22 in the world, this marks the highest ever world ranking by an Australian football team.

The rise caps an impressive 14 months for the Matildas which included a second quarter-final appearance in consecutive World Cups and winning the AFC Women’s Asian Cup in May last year.

There was little movement in the top 10 with the top five teams, led by the USA, unchanged.

Japan remained fourth despite their World Cup win.

England had the biggest rise, from 10th to sixth, while North Korea (12) dropped out of the top 10 for the first time since the rankings began in 2003.
