The value of foreign-developed players: What Football Australia can learn from Morocco for Socceroos success
Morocco is not the only nation to find success with a large contingent of foreign-developed players - and the Socceroos can join that list.
Socceroos midfielder Mark Bresciano has sealed a switch from Lazio to United Arab Emirates club Al Nasr.
Bresciano, 31, spent one season with Lazio after successful spells with Parma and Palermo but is set to leave Italy after 12 years.
His transfer to the Riyadh-based club is believed to be worth around $A5.5 million.
Al Nasr’s team manager Khalid Obaid said Bresciano could help the team challenge for trophies including the Asian Champions League.
“Bresciano is a good addition to the team with European experience,” Obaid told the Gulf News.
“The board has supported (coach) Walter Zenga’s ambition and with Bresciano we will challenge for the title and Asian Champions League progression this season.”
Bresciano has 57 caps for Australia but has not figured for the national team since last year’s World Cup.
Despite speculation he could return to the side under coach Holger Osieck, his international future remains in doubt.
