England’s 2003 Rugby World Cup winning coach Sir Clive Woodward has backed Martin Johnson’s side to see off old enemy France in Saturday’s World Cup quarter-final, even if it leaves him bleary-eyed and exhausted.

Woodward was due to spend Friday night attending a British Olympic Association (BOA) fund-raiser in London which will end in the early hours, before he heads home to watch Ireland tackle Wales followed by England’s titanic clash with France.

“This will go on until three or four in the morning and then I will watch two great quarter-finals,” said Woodward.

“The French team are very strong on paper but England are the favourites. It’ll boil down to one or two kicks at goal or one or two decisions.

“England need to come through. They’ve had a lot on their minds, but they are a bit more together than the French team.”
