If it is to be that Leon Davis has played his final game for Collingwood, he should be congratulated for his contribution.

The man affectionately known as ‘Neon’ due to his taste for the theatrics is maligned by many, but in reality, he has been the heart and soul of the club throughout his career.

Davis’ apparent desire to return to his native Western Australia should not be used against him; the Pies will be poorer for his loss, but can consider themselves lucky to have retained his services for so long.

They can consider themselves fortunate to have been part of the devastating magic that Neon Leon produced, and not on the receiving end, as any other team would attest.

His career looked all but over following Collingwood’s ultimately successful 2010 campaign, with Davis’ omission from the side following the infamous drawn Grand Final.

He reinvented himself as perhaps the most vital cog of the Pies’ defence in 2011, with his short and sharp bursts into the forward line, on the way to enjoying, undoubtedly, his best season.

Though he endured yet another heartbreaking conclusion, experiencing his third loss to complement the draw from four Grand Final outings, there is no doubt that his most recent, and most likely final campaign, will leave a lasting imprint.

Davis must have done something right to play 225 games and kick 270 goals throughout his twelve years at Collingwood.

Though the man himself would confess that none of his Grand Final appearances were among his finest outings, and many finals series altogether, this cannot be used against Davis, for it was largely his magic which propelled the Pies into the successful position which they found themselves on numerous occasions.

Should Davis choose to continue his career elsewhere, good luck to him.

He will leave Collingwood with no bad blood and will be remembered for many years to come as one of, if not the best, and most gifted small players to pull on the black and white guernsey.
