Several weeks ago, I wrote an article stating that Brendan Fevola deserves a second chance. And although that notion hasn’t come to fruition, I still stand by my original opinion that the big guy has the capacity to kick half a ton in the big league.
But let’s forget the Fevola fiasco for a second.
Some attention should go towards the Port Adelaide Football Club.
Last week, a secondary sponsor offered the club an upgrade to secure them as the major sponsor for next year on the proviso Port Adelaide sign up either Leon Davis or Brendan Fevola.
The club executives took the quasi-blackmail in all good humour, thanked the aforementioned sponsor for his continued support and finally declared that they weren’t going to take either of the two 30 year olds in the rookie draft.
Port Adelaide must be commended.
Everybody knows about their much-publicised fall from grace and their off-field financial woes. So when someone quintessentially attempts to bribe the struggling club with a seven-figure offer, many would have thought they’d take the cash and add two All-Australians to their playing list.
Port Adelaide’s decision to refuse to be pushed around by the corporate world while in a difficult situation speaks volumes of the club.
They get crap thrown at them from all directions. They’re crap, they’re poor, no one turns up to their games, you get the drift.
For a club to refuse the money and continue with their youth policy, while maintaining all of their young stars and recruiting several hardened bodies during the off season, spells a very bright future for the South Australian club.
So to all of you people who give the club a hard time, I doubt other clubs in a similar situation would have had the balls to keep their dignity and give up the much-needed cash.
Sheer determination is the embodiment and personification of Port Adelaide.
Whichever one it is, I say well done to Port Adelaide.
