Sports fans in Melbourne wished they had been able to stop time yesterday. News quickly spread around Australia’s sporting capital that something special was happening at the MCG.

For the thousands of blue-and-yellow clad Sri Lankan supporters that packed the bays and created a spectacular atmosphere for most of the match, they saw it happen.

But only a handful of Australian fans witnessed the moment Dan Christian claimed a hat-trick at the famous ground.

Victorians, as we’re told ad nauseam, love their sport. It seems many forgot this tournament was still going.

A crowd of almost 29-thousand should never be sniffed at, but the majority of those weren’t supporting the locals.

It’s a great shame because those who have actually bought a ticket to a one-day match in the last week have seen a stunning century from Virat Kohli and now a hat-trick.

Oxygen is hard to come by these days with the NRL, AFL, Super Rugby, and V8 Supercars all under way. Meanwhile Clive Palmer’s war with Football Federation Australia and the run into the A-League finals has crowded column space.

A trip to the ground now includes the sight of a man with aviator sunglasses and a Los Angeles SWAT bulletproof vest on, while the confiscation of beer-cup snakes provides an intriguing sub-plot to the battle on the ground.

Being a part of a crowd during a special sporting moment is one of life’s great joys, but have you ever missed one of the big ones like many did yesterday?

Maybe it was your round at the bar when Shane Warne claimed his 700th test wicket by bowling Andrew Strauss during the Boxing Day test of 2006.

Or perhaps your plane to Melbourne got cancelled at some point during Makybe Diva’s Melbourne Cup run.

Don’t worry. The man I saw walking down by the Yarra yesterday, shaking his head while asking his friend “Can you believe we missed a hat-trick?” shares your pain.
