A shattering FA Cup loss, but could it be the making of Andy Carroll?

In the aftermath of Liverpool’s heart-breaking FA Cup Final loss to Chelsea overnight, the overwhelming positive for the Reds was the exceptional cameo display from Andy Carroll.

Since his big-money move from Newcastle, Carroll has failed to live up to the 35 million pound price tag, but his 35 minutes of football last night showed he should be a catalyst for bigger and better things next season.

Carroll entered the fray after 55 minutes at when Liverpool had just conceded a second goal to the exceptional, Didier Drogba.

He partnered Luis Suarez upfront and his presence in the air and on the ground brought Liverpool back into the contest.

His 64th minute goal was superbly taken, as he twisted and turned past the England and Chelsea centre-half, John Terry, before smashing the ball past Petr Cech into the roof of the net.

His composure for the goal was outstanding and is something that has been missing throughout his time so far at Liverpool.

He then used his big frame to set up volleys for Jordan Henderson and Steven Gerrard outside the box, only for the midfielders to spray their shots off target.

Carroll himself created three more chances to equalise in the dying minutes, most notably the header from Luis Suarez’s cross that saw Petr Cech remarkably keep the ball from crossing the line. Replays suggest that the whole ball didn’t cross the line.

Moments before the final whistle sounded, the Liverpool supporters broke into their familiar rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone, despite the negative scoreline.

The Liverpool fans were evidently proud of their teams’ fighting performance and Andy Carroll was at the forefront of their resurgence.

A superb substitute performance is not enough to suggest that his big money move is justified. However, if Andy Carroll can take the confidence from that display into next season and perform consistently in the league, then Liverpool will certainly find themselves finishing much higher than eighth in the 2012-2013 English Premier League season.
