Brisbane coach Anthony Griffin didn’t hide his disappointment after Brisbane crashed to their third straight NRL loss at the hands of a ruthless Melbourne 34-10 at AAMI Park on Friday night.
Brisbane’s dressing room resembled a morgue after the six-tries-to-two loss, with the Storm surging six points clear of their rivals on top of the NRL ladder.
Griffin, who opted to rest three of his State of Origin veterans, Petero Civoniceva, Sam Thaiday and Justin Hodges, put his hand up in the post match press conference, refusing to offer any excuses and instead paying out on his players’ effort.
“At the moment we’ve got ourselves in a bit of a hole for whatever reason,” said Griffin.
“We came up with a horrible performance tonight but it is what it is.
“I thought we were very poor, probably our worst performance of the year.
“We didn’t have any real ethic about our attack or defence.”
A devastating late injury to young forward Dave Hala, which seems to have ended his season, made it a lousy night all-around for the Broncos.
Hala was taken by ambulance to hospital after the game with a torn tendon in his knee which also may have been dislocated.
“We were a bit off tonight,” said Broncos halfback Peter Wallace who got through the clash without any recurrence of his groin injury.
“We let ourselves down badly defensively and we’ve got a lot of work to do.”
