The newly installed NRL commission is deep in negotiations with media head honcho’s, trying to get the best television deal possible for the league.

Their aim is at least a billion dollars.

But is that it? Is that their only objective? A billion bucks and it’s on TV somewhere, some on this channel and some on that. There is some on your phone, some live, some delayed, some in really bad time slots, some stand alone, some on at the same time and all depending on what state you live in.

But hey, at least they got the billion bucks right? Right? Wrong!

NRL fans are sick of not knowing the details of when, where, what time their team is playing 6 weeks in advance. We are sick of seeing delayed football, watching football in bad time slots.

We are pretty much sick of Channel 9’s dictatorship and non promotion of the game, which has helped them become the station they are today.

Fans do not care if the NRL gets a billion dollar deal, they just need to get close. The priority should be quality footy.

We want football seven days a week, whether it’s a game, a panel show (and I mean a good one, not the crap on at the moment). It could be anything: a preview show or a magazine show. But it has to satisfy those of us who have an appetite for football all week round.

Some may say that quality footy is what the players have to produce, but I don’t think it is? Rugby league players just like every other sports athlete in the world respond to atmosphere, fans, attention, adoration. Saturation of the market place will bring in more fans, it will convert the occasional fans into passionate fans and members, and the non fans into occasional ones.

I would like the NRL to remember this ‘quality footy’ when negotiating, it’s time to reward the fans, players and Rugby League.
