Matthew Primus became the first coach this season to be shown the door after Port Adelaide advised he wouldn’t be coaching the team in 2013.

Primus, a foundation player and former Power captain, replaced Mark Williams in the latter half of 2010, winning five of the final seven games that season to secure a two year contract.

Primus had only been able to manage eight wins in his two seasons in charge.

The Power indicated that the shock loss to Greater Western Sydney over the weekend was not the lone factor in not reappointing Primus for 2013.

In a statement released by Port Adelaide today, Primus was offered to opportunity to coach the remaining four games of the season but declined. He has been replaced by assistant coach Garry Hocking, a former Geelong champion, for the remainder of the season.

It has been a tough season for the Power, who won just one of their first seven games this season- a round one victory over St. Kilda.

After stringing three consecutive wins together midway through the season against North Melbourne, Gold Coast and Carlton, the Power lost their next six before defeating Melbourne in round 17.

The Power struggled last week against Fremantle managing only two goals by three quarter time before kicking four in the last quarter to go down by 27 points.

That last quarter form did not carry into the match with Greater Western Sydney, who lead at every stage and won by 34 points in their second ever AFL victory.

The Power face a tough Hawthorn team this week at Aurora Stadium in Tasmania. The Hawks, coming off a last second loss to Geelong last Friday night, dropped from second to fourth on the AFL ladder and will be looking to win their tenth match in eleven games this weekend.

Port are also still without the signature of star midfielder Travis Boak, who is out of contract at the end of the season and is reportedly considering a move to his home state of Victoria.

One bright spark for the Power has been the emergence of new recruit Brad Ebert, who came across from West Coast at the start of this season.

Ebert has played every game for Port Adelaide and has more than 20 disposals in all but three games.

After from the Hawks, the Power will play West Coast, Brisbane and Richmond to finish the season.
