V8 Supercars will compete for championship points alongside Formula 1 for the first-time ever at Abu Dhabi this weekend.
However, the format for the spectacle is disappointing. There will be three sprint races, each comprising just 12 laps. The series is nothing more than an entrée.
Surely two longer distance races could have been considered, as is custom at most events on the V8 Supercars calendar these days.
Certainly on the Saturday, in place of the first two sprint races, there was a priceless opportunity for spectators at the venue (predominantly for F1) to witness a fully fledged V8 affair in close quarters.
Indeed, the F1 layout will be utilised rather than the shortened configuration used during V8 Supercars’ first two standalone visits, meaning that lap times will be well in excess of two minutes.
Even so, 12-lap affairs open the door to all sorts of carnage. While desirable for fans, this is anything but for the teams, some of which have a championship at stake. And of course, the Formula 1 fraternity wants a clean track.
Thinking outside the box and looking toward the future, I’d love to see F1 drivers jumping into the V8s, in a similar vein to the Gold Coast 600. Now that would be something worth watching!
