The value of foreign-developed players: What Football Australia can learn from Morocco for Socceroos success
Morocco is not the only nation to find success with a large contingent of foreign-developed players - and the Socceroos can join that list.
Newcastle United attacking midfielder Bradden Inman is keeping his options open and has yet to make a decision on whether to pledge his international future to Australia or Scotland.
Inman, 21, was born and raised in Adelaide and joined Newcastle as a teenager in 2007, graduating from the club’s academy. With a Scottish mother he is eligible for both countries and has previously made seven appearances for Scotland under-19s and two appearances for Scotland Under-21s.
Currently on loan with League One outfit Crewe Alexandra, Inman was one of 22 players selected in an Australian training camp for potential Socceroos, Olyroos and Young Socceroos, which was held in Germany in March 2011.
The talented playmaker says he is focused on continuing his good form at Crewe and winning another professional deal with the Magpies, with his Newcastle United contract finishing at the end of this season.
Inman joined Crewe in November last year and has already bagged three goals in six appearances for the club. His exploits at the Alexandra Stadium have been rewarded with his loan recently extended for another month.
Before that Inman had notched seven goals in eight starts for Newcastle’s under-21 side this season, and won the Geordies’ ‘Wor Jackie’ award for the club’s best under-18 player 2010.
I chatted with Inman about the tug of war between Scotland and Australia, how he originally ended up on Tyneside and about his time at Crewe.
