New Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley banked a first-up win with with a 50-point steamrolling of St Kilda in Sunday’s AFL pre-season cup game.
The Power took control with five early goals and were never threatened in a 1.9.2 (65) to 0.2.3 (15) victory at AAMI Stadium.
The Saints earlier beat Adelaide by 26 points, but were sluggish in their second outing in searing 38 degree heat.
Hinkley’s tenure as Port coach started with five goals in the initial 15 minutes as the Power were sparked by spearhead Jay Schulz (two goals) and nippy novice forward Jake Neade.
Neade, an 18-year-old from the Northern Territory, kicked a goal in his first official match for Port while fellow debutant Oliver Wines was also prominent in the midfield.
Port had almost double the amount of disposals as St Kilda in the first half, and continued their dominance by booting three goals in seven minutes to open the second half.
Midfielders Paul Stewart (two goals), Brad Ebert and Matthew Broadbent all kicked majors, with Broadbent putting the result beyond doubt with a super goal from beyond 50 metres.
The Saints struggled for winners, though Tom Lee (one goal) threatened on the forward line, onballers Leigh Montagna and Jack Steven toiled hard, and defender James Gwilt was solid.
In the early match, St Kilda thumped an under-strength Adelaide with recruit Trent Dennis-Lane making an instant impact with two goals in a 0.8.2 (50) to 0.3.6 (24) triumph.
Saints spearhead Beau Maister also booted two majors, as did small forward Terry Milera, while onballer Farren Ray (12 disposals) and Gwilt and Arryn Sippos were prominent .
Veteran Graham Johncock kicked all three goals for Adelaide, who rested nine top-liners and struggled for cohesion despite sound displays from onballers Matthew Wright and acting captain David Mackay.
