Weekend footy wrap up

This week marked round one of a split AFL round and round three of the NRL. So who were the winners and losers?

Winner: Penrith Panthers

Despite the weekend’s loss, the Penrith Panthers showed they could hold their own against one of the top teams, even without Lachlan Coote.

The Panthers rode the crowd home on Sunday, and could have won if they’d held their nerve for just a little longer.

Good luck to the boys this week against the Gold Coast Titans

Winner: Gold Coast Titans

This week, the Gold Coast Titans firmed themselves as ones to look out for in 2013, beating the hot Sea Eagles in front of a home crowd.

This week’s challenge should also see a ‘w’, travelling to the foot of the mountains to play the Panthers.

Winner: Essendon Bombers

Perhaps the award for the best effort this weekend can go to the Essendon Bombers. Everyone knew they would have plenty to prove in their first match of the year, but no-one expected them to beat the Crows in Adelaide, let alone by six goals. A week off well earned.

Loser: West Coast Eagles

As well as being thumped by arch rivals Fremantle, West Coast also added Mark LeCras back to their out-the-door infirmary. Both those add up to equal a very bad week for West Coast.

Let’s hope they use the week off to reassess and work out how they can beat the Hawks without some of the biggest stars.

Loser: Adelaide Crows

The Crows would be bitterly disappointed with their first-round loss to the Bombers.

Despite the fact the Bombers had much more to play for, one would’ve thought that a trip to the preliminary finals would’ve taught the Crows a thing or two about winning tough football matches.

Fool of the week: Hayden Ballantyne

To say Hayden Ballantyne will be featuring in this category a few times this year would be an understatement.

Less than one quarter into his 2013 campaign and Ballantyne found himself reported for striking Scott Selwood, and will most likely sit out Freo’s round two encounter with the Dogs.

Well done, Frodo.
