Choosing a team's sponsors is the only true way to be loyal to them

I recently decided there are more ways of supporting your sporting clubs than becoming a member or buying merchandise – selecting your club’s sponsors.

Great, I thought. My teams would only associate with the best in the business, so nothing can go wrong.

It turns out that there can be serious ramifications for a loyal supporter.

I come from Brisbane, so naturally, I support the Broncos, Reds, Roar and Lions.

As a Roar supporter, I always have to dine at the Coffee Club. Sure, their coffee’s good, but I have to pay $1000 for a piece of bread topped with ridiculously thin slices of avocado and salmon!

When the Brisbane Roar announced Great Solar was a new partner, I had to tear down my old solar panels just so I could remain loyal to my team, costing me hundreds of dollars.

As for the Reds, they forced me to change to St. George Bank, and buy a brand-new Volvo, a manufacturer I never liked in the first place, but had to buy from in order to ‘support’ my team.

The Brisbane Lions are partnered with National Storage, so happily I can store my Volvo with them. Unfortunately for me, they are also partnered with Carlton Draught and Vero Insurance, which brings me to the Broncos.

They have XXXX and NRMA as their beer and insurance partners respectively, so I have to balance them with the Lions’ partners.

I’ve decided to drink XXXX on Fridays and Carlton Draught on Saturdays and Sundays, because let’s face it, these two clubs never play on any other days of the week.

As for my insurance, I’ve had to place one half of my assets with Vero and the other with NRMA.

I was very disheartened in the off-season when Hyundai became the Broncos’ new automotive sponsor. I had to sell my $100,000 Audi just to remain loyal to my team.

Another huge downside of supporting the Broncos is that I have to listen to Nova in the mornings. My ears have suffered permanent damage from what my doctor calls ‘crappy music intolerance’.

Sure, my life is extremely complicated, confusing and, at times, intolerable, but hey, at least I can say I’m extremely loyal, which is a lot more than many of the players I used to cheer for can say!
