AFL should bring back the reserves

Isn’t it a pity that the AFL doesn’t have the mechanisms, nor the desire, to listen to what the public wants?

They represent the clubs, they say, however dictate like despots of old, censuring clubs, coaches, players for misdemeanours they say, or ‘bringing the game into disrepute’.

No matter what we might feel is good for the game as we know and love it, the AFL dictates that it knows better!

Because the game is so good, the AFL thinks it can do anything and the public will follow. This unfortunately is the case – the AFL presides over a unique game in a unique set of circumstances.

What sort of things do supporters feel are sadly missed?

Maybe bring back the reserve grade competition.

Why can’t we resurrect a VFL (seconds) match before the main game? This gets thrown up quite often and goes nowhere other than talks about it being too expensive. I’m sure accountants and financial experts could work out a viable model.

Supporters miss the days when they could get to the football early and watch some of the emerging talent in the seconds.

These days, patrons arrive at the ground much later as there’s no activity at the ground to entertain them and, importantly, cater for the needs of junior supporters.

We are not demanding that things return to what they were from long ago – we just want some local character and enjoyment before everything is stripped away under the guise of progress and increased revenues.

Andrew Demetriou – can you listen for once and give the supporters something back?

Foxtel can look after itself, we don’t need to prostitute the game to that extent for survival.
