Last week I gave an analysis of the long-term stats of A-League teams and, based on comments, figured it was worth providing a few more numbers and figures on our association code.

To date there have been 906 regular season A-League games, with 2436 goals, or 2.69 goals per match.

In terms of goals scored, season four was head and shoulders above the rest with 2.96 goals per game. This was followed up in season five by the lowest, with 2.58.

Most total goals scored in a season goes to Brisbane Roar in their first championship season of 10/11, with a massive 58 goals in 30 games at 1.93 per game, though their per game total is just piped by the Melbourne Victory side of 06/07 with 41 goals at 1.95.

On the flip side, the woeful NZ Knights managed to score a total of only 28 goals in two seasons. Season two saw them score a paltry total of only 13 goals at 0.62 per game.

Best defence in a season surprisingly goes to this years new boys, Western Sydney Wanderers. 21 goals conceded in 27 games at 0.78 puts them just ahead of this year’s Central Coast Mariners, with 22.

The team most strikers would want to play against was the New Zealand Knights from season one, who gave up 47 goals at 2.24. Worst total for a season was 60 by North Queensland Fury at exactly 2.00 in 10/11.

Most wins in a season is a close one. Roar in 10/11 and WSW in 12/13 both had 18 wins, though Roar played three more games. WSW average this year then was exactly two wins every three games, which also ties with Victory from 06/07, who won 14 from 21.

With one win from 21 games in season one, NZ Knights have by far the worst record any way you look at it.

I already mentioned total home and away records last week, but the most home wins in a season goes to this year’s CCM, with 11 wins from 13 starts.

Notably, Roar in 10/11 are the only side not to have lost a game at home during a season. The Knights failed to win a home game in season one.

On the road, WSW have the most wins in a season, with 10 from 13, while Victory had 8 from 10 for the best average in season two.

On 10 occasions, teams have managed to win only one game on the road during an entire season. NZ Knights, Newcastle and Perth have done this twice.

Wellington and CCM both hold the record for most home goals in a season at 32, in 10/11 and 12/13 respectively, though CCM played two less games and, at 2.46, scored the most per match.

With only 10 goals in 14 games at 0.71, Adelaide had the worst home ground record in 11/12.

Roar hold the total away goal record with 27 in 10/11, while Victory have the best per game at 2.2 in 06/07.

So just how big is ‘home ground advantage’?

Overall in the A-League, 75 percent of games have a winner and a loser, while 25 percent of matches end in a draw, so on average teams win 37 percent of their games.

Of those games, 45 percent are won by the home team, and only 29 percent by the team away. Of the 2.7 goals scored per game, 1.5 are by the home side, and 1.2 by the away.

Finally, next season, when your team has a poor start, or debate about the finals series starts up again, remember, in eight seasons of the A-League, from 73 attempts, only 13 times has a team finished the season having won at least half of their regular season games.
