Channel Ten has been awarded by the IOC the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, acquiring broadcast rights across all media platforms in Australia.
IOC President Jacques Rogge said, “Australia is a sports loving nation with passionate Olympic fans, and therefore we are very pleased to be able to announce this agreement with Ten to ensure fantastic broadcast coverage of the Olympic Winter Games.”
Channel Ten CEO Hamish McLennan said the move was part of an overall strategy by the network to invest more in sport.
“We are delighted that Ten will be Australia’s Olympic network in 2014,” Mr McLennan said.
“The agreement with the IOC delivers on our strategy to increase our investment in premium sport. Australia will field its largest-ever Winter Olympic team at Sochi, and we are confident that some of those 56 athletes will be among the Games’ star performers.
“We are also confident that Australian viewers and advertisers will embrace our coverage of the Sochi Games.”
Ten has also bid $500 Million for the Australian Cricket TV Rights for five years, after missing out on the AFL, NRL, horse racing, football and V8 Supercars TV rights and pulling the plug on the Australian Open Golf.
Ten’s has also bid to overtake Nine’s $45 million paid annually to cover international cricket.
Nine’s deal gives the network the last rights of refusal – effectively, a chance to match any bid from rival networks to televise cricket.
Ten will also bid for the Australian Open Tennis TV rights.
