As far as I know, Robbie is still planning to let Quade Cooper start for the Reds next Saturday when they play the Lions. As yet, he has not drafted him into the Wallabies squad.

This could turn out to be a very bad decision.

It could be that Deans, still smarting from Quade’s very public criticism of the Wallabies, has no intention of picking him?

But what happens if Quade bedazzles the Lions with some amazing rugby? Then the Australian media and public will loudly demand his inclusion, and Deans will be forced to start him in the first Test.

But the Lions will have already seen his bag of tricks. Warren Gatland will study the tape, choose his team accordingly, and there will be no more magic in Brisbane.

He will lose a lot of his impact.

I have some advice for Robbie if he wants to beat the Lions.

If he wants to give the Wallabies their best chance – I’m sure he does – then maybe the smartest thing he can do is forgive QC.

Then, he needs to hand him the Wallaby 10 jersey, and let him watch the Reds game from the stands with his powder good and dry.
